Performance und generell Kunst werden als Ort und Praxis betrachtet, wo Kritik am Leben unter kapitalistischen Verhältnissen geformt und artikuliert werden kann. Mit den StudentInnenprotesten im Mai 1968 und der generellen Rebellion gegen den Kapitalismus bekam diese „künstlerische Kritik“ einen „realen Raum“. Moderne Organisationstheorien verwenden dieselbe Sprache von Autonomie, Spontanität und Authentizität wie die Rebellen von einst. Wenn also Performance in das „Reale“ von heute eingreift, so tut sie dies mit der Komplizenschaft der kapitalistischen Logik. Ausgehend von diesem – zugegebenermaßen düsteren – Standpunkt stellt sich die Frage nach dem kritischen Potenzial von Performances.

Performance and art in general are considered a place and practice where a critique of life can be formulated and articulated under capitalist conditions. The student protests in May 1968 and the general rebellion against capitalism gave this “artistic critique” an “actual space”. Modern organisational theories employ the same talk of autonomy, spontaneity and authenticity as the rebels back then.
So when performance enters the “real” of today, it does so with the complicity of the capitalist logic. Based on this – admittedly bleak outlook – the question concerning the critical potential of performance begs to be asked.
