Panaibra Gabriel Canda - The Marrabenta Solos
For 400 years, Mozambique was a Portuguese colony – since attaining independence in 1975, the country has been haltingly moving towards freedom.
When Panaibra Gabriel Canda dances, his body reflects the inner turmoil of his homeland, a country marked by tribal affiliations, colonialism, communism and democracy.
To the sounds of Marrabenta, a music style typical of his home-city Maputo, Panaibra Gabriel Canda, one of the most important choreographers of sub-Saharan Africa, thematises his identity while also narrating contemporary Mozambican society through his fascinatingly interpreted miniatures.
For sixty utterly intense minutes, he struggles to free himself from the constraints of history and become his very own sovereign. Dance is his weapon towards personal independence.
