One hour of pure energy, utmost intensity and ecstatic physicality. Her frenzied movements take Marlene Monteiro Freitas to the very limits of what the human body can do. The urgency with which she performs her solo is palpable in every spot of the auditorium.
While attending a concert, Marlene Monteiro Freitas drew a sketch of a singer and called this figure »Guintche«: »it became bigger and bigger, acquired greater and greater independence. It rebelled and demanded autonomy. And to satisfy this craving, I had to put it onstage.«
Cape Verdean choreographer and dancer Monteiro Freitas has inter alia collaborated with Boris Charmatz and Emmanuelle Huynh. (M)IMOSA, a joint choreography project with Trajal Harrell, François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea, won her a larger audience. With Guintche, Marlene Monteiro Freitas presents her third solo work.
Guintche is a choreography that covers all bases – ranging from great beauty to disconcerting monstrosity – and confronts us with a fundamental question: “how can I become somebody else and yet remain myself?”
