Sungmin Hong - Juliettttt
Five young women – they all are Shakespeare’s Juliet, and they all are alone, without a Romeo, Mercutio or Nurse to keep them company. Visual artist and director Sungmin Hong, a meticulous researcher of world theatre, has selected actresses from five South Korean productions of Romeo and Juliet to play the part simultaneously in Juliettttt.
The famous balcony scene is declaimed on five chairs; five times, it was the nightingale, and not the lark, and five Juliets die at the grim end. Traditional Korean Pansori style meets classic Western drama, melodramatic musical productions and exciting dance theatre. A fantastic visual feast that opens a window on the staging of European world literature in the South Korean theatrical landscape; a fabulously beautiful production that is atmospherically dense and playfully delicate.
Sungmin Hong’s Juliettttt is the artist’s first work to be shown in Europe.
