A nuclear catastrophe, the breakdown of the capitalist system or World War III: how can anyone prepare for cataclysm? Vienna is a city of maximum quality of life, but times are changing! YOYO – You are On Your Own indicates strategies that considerably raise chances of survival in the event of a catastrophe. It is comically bizarre and at the same time unsettling when various kinds of dismal future scenarios are juxtaposed with the activities of “survivalists”. In the basement beneath the church of Saint Ursula, performer Mikko Niemistö presents the prototype of an innovative facility. How can we survive for a prolonged period of time in a claustrophobic environment and even maintain our mental sanity? The performance sheds light on the relationship between future scenarios, fear and an individual’s options to act against the background of today’s affluent society. The result is an absurd and entertaining piece carried by fundamental fears.
