NATURE
“There is a tribe known as the ethnographic Filmmakers, who believe they are invisible. They enter the room where a feast is being celebrated, or the sick being cured, or the dear mourned, and, though weighted down with odd machines entangled with wires, imagine they are unnoticed … Outsiders know little of them, for their homes are hidden in the partially uncharted rain forests of the Documentary. Like other Documentarians, they survive by hunting and gathering information. Unlike others of their filmic group, most prefer to consume it raw … They worship a terrifying deity known as Reality, whose eternal enemy is its evil twin, Art.” Eliot Weinberger, The Camera People
With their new work, nadaproductions explore the relationship between humans and nature as it is represented in the arts and the media. To this end, they refer especially to the genre of documentary films, which is repeatedly said to maintain a privileged relationship to reality. Particularly the use of voice and language in the voiceover as a means for “objective” representation of the environment is taken to ironic extremes by nadaproductions and thus relegated back within its limits. Both artists like to go into nature themselves to develop their performance outside of the protected theatre space to help accomplish this. Only after they concluded the development and rehearsal phase do they now return to the brut stage with the completed piece. NATURE is an attempt to reveal the absurdity of the apparent neutrality of nature’s representation by the media and to undermine and reverse the concurrent power structures between human cultivation and nature for the duration of the performance. www.nadaproductions.at
