Christiane Jatahy/August Strindberg/Cia. Vértice de Teatro - Julia

In portugiesischer Sprache mit deutschen Übertiteln

“And now?” the actor asks her partner at the end of this short but intense tour de force. She asks again and again, increasingly impatient, and turns to the audience, equal parts perplexed and provoking. And now? And now? The very young Julia is a spoiled yet playful daughter of the rich and beautiful, and of course white, in this Brazilian variation on Miss Julie set in Rio de Janeiro – and her Jean, who is called Jelson here, is the black gardener’s son and young chauffeur from the neighbouring favela. They’ve grown up together, next to each other, and yet are light years apart. Textually, author and director Christiane Jatahy has managed to create a modern parable about the latent racism behind social relationships with this contemporary adaptation. Not only that, at the aesthetic level she also presentsa complexly interwoven and virtuoso contemporary theatre and cinemapiece: the set is also an ingenious film backdrop. A cameraman follows Julia and Jelson at every turn, and scenes played live overlap and alternate with live filmed and pre-produced scenes until, ultimately, the audience is sitting right in the middle of the action. And now?
