“We play with failure, attempt, endurance, utterance, trashiness, the pathetic, triumph, mess.” The newcomer group GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN from London – made up of director Hester and performers Jen and Lucy –specialises in ‘Broken Genre Performances’. It’s some sort of post-dramatic theatre in which the performers, in direct dialog with the audience, are so naked on stage that they sometimes even have to put on rabbit costumes both for their own and our protection. Big Hits is an evening in which Lucy announces her five ultimate love songs and promises to make her heart explode for us right there. An absurdly inscrutable trip of self-discovery: while she attempts with increasing hysterics to hit the right notes in the interminably same song, Jen, as a giant plush rabbit and the evening’s moderator gives increasingly befuddled talks about self-improvement and self-love…a subtly sadistic lesson in feminist-fetishist free space between live art and theatre – “so that thinking of performance becomes performance itself”.
