Roger Bernat

Pending vote

Österreichische Erstaufführung

“In Pending Vote I’m testing parliament as a theatrical form. When today’s politicians continue to act out, I want to work together with the audience to begin transforming acting into politics!” Roger Bernat

“Do you feel capable this evening of making decisions and bearing the consequences?” In Pending Vote, Spanish director Roger Bernat ventures a subversive experiment on the day before the Austrian national elections: brut’s theatre space will become a temporary parliament where the audience will take its fate into its own hands. The process is controlled by a computer system that confronts the audience with a tempest of highly political or even extremely absurd questions and allows them to vote. While this immature political system mutates through various democratic forms, where power structures are created and dissolved, there are heated discussions and debates. Until ultimately the integrity and transparency of the system becomes doubtful and mistrust of the invisible mastermind that seems to be behind everything grows. Pending Vote sets off in search of a more truthful version of current debate culture. The goal isn’t to reconstruct fictitious parliamentary debates, but instead to create a “politics of fiction”. www.rogerbernat.info

An audience discussion with the journalist Robert Misik will be taking place following the performance.
