SHIROKURO
“This impressive realisation of Ustvolskaya’s sonatas with explosive, incisive choreography is a brilliant metaphor for moral and psychological turmoil.” Tanz
SHIROKURO is a collaboration between choreographer Nicole Beutler, pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama and lighting designer Jean Kalman. This concert performance is happening in brut at the invitation of WIEN MODERN, Austria’s largest festival for new music as part of this year’s festival focus of “Dance – WIEN MODERN moves”. The title of the piece is Japanese and literally means black-white. SHIROKURO revolves around contrasts and conflicts. The Piano sonatas No. 5 and 6 by Russian composer Galina Ustvolskaya – based on Schumann’s Six Studies op. 56 – form the centrepiece of the performance. The composer earned the title “The woman with the hammer” with these sonatas. Their powerful, pulsating rhythms coordinate the movements of dancer Mitchell-Lee van Rooij and pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama while the lighting by Jean Kalman accentuates the tension. Dance, music and light in SHIROKURO depict an image of conflict and turmoil in a concentrated atmosphere. www.nbprojects.nl
