Doris Uhlich

mehr als genug

brutproduktion

“A cleverly ironic self-portrait with a focus on the body.” Wiener Zeitung

Doris Uhlich asks herself and her audience how the body becomes a trademark and what that means in mehr als genug [more than enough]. Uhlich, who time and again is referred to as a “corpulent dancer” in newspaper reviews, questions the importance of the outer shell and the flesh beneath the skin. How dominant is a body’s outward appearance for a piece’s reception? Is there a perfect body for dance? And ultimately: who is beautiful and who isn’t? What does the word ‘beautiful’ even mean? In live telephone calls she talks to people who’s bodies do not meet the (beauty)norms and who have become trademarks because of it. Do these people create these trademarks themselves or do others do it for them? What strange phenomenon are we currently witnessing where everybody wants to be unique yet no one breaks ranks? The Baroque epoch’s impulse to overabundance provides the basis for a physical and textual discussion with an abundance of flesh and opulence. www.dorisuhlich.at
