Andreas Dorau
Todesmelodien
“I don’t actually think that I make funny things.” Andreas Dorau
Andreas Dorau creates art, grand art even. He doesn’t allow himself to be dismissed as a silly idiot bard of pop. Back at the age of fifteen he landed a German new wave hit, Fred Vom Jupiter [Fred From Jupiter], and somehow has remained true to his image as an ambiguous pop star – if always in a somewhat modified form – even after his stint as a 1980s youth idol. He seldom does without synthesisers in his eccentric songs, and not least the texts – which sometimes seem to be just an embellishment – are what make Dorau’s songs into complete works of art, since they are ingenious and have a philosophical quality. He rarely addresses such profane things as love in his songs – the Blue Tit and all sorts of other little animals are more his thing. Six years after his previous album, Dorau honours brut with his new album Todesmelodien [Death Melodies]. Although the topic is a bit sombre, this northern poet presents amusing and exhilarating lyrics and melodies. He sings of Edelsteine [Gemstones] and defeats Stimmen in der Nacht [Voices in the Night], because a diamond like Dorau simply never fades.
