Data Dealer Inc.

Data Dealer. Legal, illegal, scheißegal.

“The online game Data Dealer transforms inexperienced Facebook users into astonished data dealers. Their work can accomplish what no warning advice, no explanatory article and no lesson is able to achieve.” Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

Collecting, sorting, linking and distributing private data has become a giant industry. Using much wit and irony, the Facebook game Data Dealer is dedicated to the cutting edge subject of personal data in the digital age. Based on the principles of popular Facebook games such as Mafia Wars, Farmville and Cityville, Data Dealer is all about collecting personal data, and as limitless and as on grand a scale as possible. Players accumulate wealth through skilful trading of personal information. They make use of both legal and dubious sources, get hold of juicy information on the data black market and operate sweepstakes and telephone inquiries, Internet dating agencies, online psycho-tests and, ultimately, their own Social Web. The game is introduced in brut in the form of a video trailer as a dynamic product presentation by its developer, Wolfie Christl. This introduction to digital data collection is supplemented by a performance/reading from Google’s current privacy policy. Media artists Christina Goestl (live visuals) and Boris Kopeinig (DJ set) provide the appropriate atmosphere in images and sounds, and for very zeitgeist-oriented urbanists, a synth-pop live act concludes the evening with tender sub-basses and passionate singing by Didi Bruckmayr & Romantik Duo Traun.
